Who deserves your consideration . . .

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

and how might the answer effect your brand? Dictionary.com defines consideration as: thoughtful or sympathetic regard or respect; thoughtfulness for others. This is a hot button for me, so bare with me. The world we live in perpetuates our inconsiderate behavior. Through a variety of means, we are becoming more and more self absorbed. The more we think about ourselves, obviously the less we consider others.

Simple things like holding the door, saying excuse me, playing our music at an appropriate volume, sharing relevant information, genuinely asking people how they are doing and more considerate acts are becoming more rare to find. Interestingly enough, we rarely receive feedback regarding our inconsiderate behavior or dismiss the responses we get as others being too sensitive.

Unfortunately for some who have attained some level of success, the need for change will be harder to identify. They often believe that they’ve achieved their success because of their behavior and not in spite of it. Ultimately it’s a part of our brand that gets retold over and over again.

I would love to declare a National Consideration Month and survey a sample of people to see how their experiences differed from other months. I have no doubt that a little nudge would dramatically change how we relate to each other. Given our propensity to self absorption, seeing our unattractive ways is often difficult.
